“Everything’s Coming Up Roses” with Sugar 3D Printing

With this year’s introduction of the ChefJet and ChefJet Pro 3D sugar printers at CES 2014, “sweet technology” is being redefined in a whole new way. For the first time, 3D printers are moving into the kitchen!

Last year, we introduced The Sugar Lab on the Cubify blog with their 3D printed sugar filagree skull for El Día de los Muertos, a collaboration with American artist Joshua Harker.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, The Sugar Lab founders Kyle and Liz started thinking about one of the sweetest holidays for sugar consumption. They wanted to do a modern take on the most classic Valentine’s Day icon item they could think of–the long stemmed rose. We chatted with Kyle and Liz regarding their delicate, beautiful, chocolate print and had to know the details of how the rose was brought to life.

Cubify.com:  How long did the rose or roses take to print? Were they printed off single or in multiples ?
Liz & Kyle: We printed all 3 roses at once, The entire process took about an hour.

Cubify: Is the stem and the rose printed in one piece? How long is the rose? (measurement)
L & K:Yes, the stems are attached to the roses, just like the real thing! The rose with stem is approximately 7″ long.

Cubify: We have to let people know, are they available for purchase now or could they be available for order in the future? or is this an experimental piece?
L & K: This is a Sugar Lab Valentine’s Day special! At this point, it’s an experimental project only.

Cubify:How strong is the rose? Could the flowers essentially be printed off by the dozen and put into a vase for display? That would be amazing!
L & K: The chocolate recipe is quite strong, but since the stem is so long and thin, it’s still fairly delicate. They could be displayed in a vase, though–that’s a great idea!

Cubify: The sugar that was used to create the roses are flavored with chocolate correct?
L & K: The ChefJet 3D printer is compatible with a number of confectionary recipes, including sugar, candy in a variety of flavors, and milk-chocolate. The chocolate recipe is probably the most popular–it tastes like a rich chocolate cookie!
