CAD the Next Frontier

Published on June 13th, 2012 by in Apps

Cubify is growing every day. New models, users, and cubes are popping up across the world. While our library of things to print continues to become vaster and our apps continue to get more complex, there will always be a desire for people to design their ideas from scratch rather than choosing from something pre made. When the topic comes up, it’s common to ask where to start. After all, there are plenty of CAD programs out there ranging from free to $2000+ as well as super simple to Graduate Student complex.

If you are wondering where to start, I’m always a fan of free. Tinkercad is free and simple enough that a kid can use it. I’m going to give it a shot shortly to see if I can make something useful since I’ve been quite clear on the fact I am certainly not a designer.

Google Sketchup is another free alternative and while it may not be quite as simple as tinkercad, its still a great way to get your feet wet. If you want to graduate to an actual CAD package, Alibre Design starts at $199 too. Happy designing and as always feel free to send me a file or two and I’ll print them on the Cube :) .
